History

It all began in the late 1960's while visiting a cousin...

She had this miniature poodle with a mop of black curly hair. She called her Myrtle. I was enchanted. A few years later, mourning the loss of a white miniature, I remembered Myrtle so went to her breeders. They offered me the pick of their next litter and their Mum was Myrtle's Mum having her final brood.  My pick puppy became my much loved Josephine, a great companion for 19 years.

I read the Complete Poodle book by Lydia Hopkins, and she advised in her book to build your kennel on the best foundation you can find and it must be a bitch. I knew my foundation could not be Josephine so I began to search for a truly great one. I found her in Emily Post.

Three families within the family descend from Emily.   They are the Evening Post family, the Shogun family and the Chelsea family. All Kasalland poodles trace back to these three lines. A fourth strain, the Kalvin, is lost.

In the mid-eighties a bitch bred in Florida at the renown Aizbel kennel came to Kasalland. After an amazing show career her blood was combined with Emily's family and the Kasalland Look was set.

Several stud dogs have contributed to the Kasalland Look. Most notable in the early years were Nathaniel and his son Edward. Emily's son Shogun had major influence through his daughter Emma Hart.

A small Rochambeau dog was important through his three sons who all stood at stud at the same time (also grandsons Arrow and Jeremy).  A well bodied dog called Aussie brought down under blood to the family. The BISS STRUT dog contributed especially through his good daughter Lulu.  In the same era, the Luxury Item dog Timmy (who was descended from Josephine) became useful.  Most notable were his daughter Fancy and his son Burnt Sienna. These two Champions produced many Champions for Kasalland and others.

Recent years have been most notable because of a dog I discovered and purchased, the BIS dog Beau TP. Soon followed the Dante dog imported from America. In the starting gate ready to make their mark are the young dogs Rudi, already gaining the respect of other breeders and Silas who had a whirlwind show career in 2002.

Our story can't be told without Jane in it.

She was our flagship for several years. Like her great grandmother Emily she was a multiple Best In Show winner and won Specialties. Jane was a great individual, very fond of everyone she met, very confident with other dogs and she possessed a wonderful sense of humour. Jane's daughter Marjorie was one of the best Kasallands. Jane's sister Eliza Doolittle founded her own significant  family which includes several foundation bitches at Sharona, Four Winds and Noteworthy.  The High Born bitch through her son Winston, the Waltzin' Matilda bitch through her several sons and the Mona Lisa through numerous outstanding progeny all contributed to these kennels.

It was all left up to a small Marjorie daughter called Adele to carry on Jane's influence. She produced Silas who after a successful show career (2002) came home to stand at stud. Silas's daughters Martha, Celeste, Shawtae, Maria and now Oksana are all proof of Silas's importance as a sire.  Oksana was the Ontario Specialty Best in Show winner in 2006 defeating a large international entry. These young bitches insure the continuation of the Jane family.

And to bring this narrative up-to-date , the young Dennis the Menace dog (Beau's last puppy) finished his championship title in grand style winning numerous Puppy Groups and Group placements.  After winning the Specialty, our Oksana finished her title at the impressive Trillium show under a Breed Specialist from the USA.  These two youngsters were our "stars" of 2006 and are valuable to our future breeding plans.

Our Drum dog Dances to a Different Drum and is quickly making his impact as a useful sire.  Genetically clean with many fine attributes, his offspring are outstanding companion dogs and some of them will be starting show careers in 2007.

After breeding Miniature Poodles for 37 years it is time to slow down "a little" so only a limited number of Kasallands will be available each year.

Only the very finest puppies will be offered and we will be particular about just who gets to own one of these fine treasures.
